All the study materials and opportunities to practice are well integrated into the gameplay, and you are able to revisit them as much as you need to.

#LEARN JAPANESE TO SURVIVE HIRAGANA BATTLE ITEMS HOW TO#
Learn how to read and write Hiragana at your own pace. The game has fun locations to explore, side quests to complete and NPCs to chat to, and the majority of these contribute to your Japanese learning - which includes some beginner vocabulary and grammar as well as Hiragana. This trio of educational anime RPGs puts a fresh and entertaining spin on gaming and learning a new language Jump into Learn Japanese To Survive Hiragana Battle, a full-blown RPG specifically designed to keep you engaged by introducing you to the Japanese language like never before. The main storyline provides the motivation for your quest but it's basic enough that you will stay focused on your studies rather than pondering the plot. Making the game engaging without distracting you from studying is well balanced throughout. The battles have some basic JRPG elements like status effects to keep it interesting, but the overall simplicity keeps your focus on recalling Hiragana characters rather than strategising. It's easy to work with the system though because the fights are simple and therefore predictable, which I expect is intentional since this is a learning tool. For example, a particular enemy might be defeated more quickly than you expected, so one of your characters might end up looking like a right plonker by trying to attack them. You're going to know these Hiragana characters reeaaalllyyyy well! (Admittedly, this is undermined on the occasions when you get the exact same group of enemies multiple times in a row and just input the same response without thinking.)Ī flaw in Hiragana Battle's turn-based system is having to choose every party member's actions at the beginning of the round, which prevents you from reacting to unforeseen events. The advantage Hiragana Battle has over other JRPGs is being able to tell yourself that you're learning from the infuriating frequency of the fights. Triggering encounters every few steps when you just want to explore/leave can be frustrating. Like the JRPGs that inspired Hiragana Battle's gameplay, it can get tedious when walking through dungeons. I first played Hiragana Battle in 2017, subsequently played the two other Learn Japanese To Survive games, and recently revisited this one for some light revision.
